This week we sit down with 2 great developers within the Joomla Community, Jeremy Wilken and Joe LeBlanc. Both have been part of the Joomla Community for many years, and they have come together to collaborate on a new Joomla Distribution they call Square One CMS. Think of it as the latest Joomla build on a diet. No extensions ship with Square One except the User Manager, ACL and Article component. However, all of the Joomla default extensions are readily available in the Extensions manager and can be added with one click of the mouse.

The idea behind Square One, is to give site builders and developers a clean slate to build out your own distro of Joomla that you can deploy over and over again. Think of it as a Distribution you can use to build Distributions!

Listen in while we discuss how Square One came about, and where these guys plan on taking it in the future.

Topic Discussion - Introducing Square One CMS

Site: www.squareonecms.org

Github: https://github.com/square-one/square-one-cms

Mailing List: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/square-one-cms

RV to Jeremy - Alright... so Jeremy, Square One CMS is described as a light Joomla distribution. Can you explain what that is and how it came about?

DH to Joe - When did you first notice Square One and start to get involved with the project?

RV to Jeremy - Who do you think benefits by using Square One? Is it geared toward site-builders, those new to Joomla, seasoned devs? Where’s the market niche for this?

DH to Joe - You’ve recently partnered with Jeremy with both of you joining Cory Webb Media. Congrats. Have you had a chance to use Square One in your work there?

RV to Jeremy - So now that you’ve gotten Square One trimmed down, what’s the next step for Square One? Where do you see it going over the next 6 months?

RV to Joe - Where would you like to see Square One improve Joe? Do you share Jeremy’s vision, or do you have a full-on ulterior motive?

DH to Jeremy - Have you seen much community support for S1 since you released the first stable version? Are you looking for volunteers in specific areas?

RV to Joe - I know Jeremy stated he hopes work done in Square One will make it back upstream to the Joomla project. Have you seen any support of that yet from the community or members of the joomla project?

DH to Jeremy - You’re again part of the J and Beyond Video team this year, will you also get a chance to do a presentation on Square One at JAB 2012?

RV to Joe - We mentioned Joomla and GSOC in the News earlier, are you participating in that this year? Can you talk a bit about that?

Working in the Community

The RCC (Regional Community Coordinators) is working on getting an oversight of all the regional communities that exist in the world. Although this work isn’t finished yet, the RCC will be contacting as many local community and JUG leaders as possible in order to learn from them, and enable them to share their experiences on how to set up and maintain local communities, translations, events and JUGs. The RCC is in formation now, check the Help Wanted forum later this month if you would like to get involved!

The Showcase site team has grown (http://community.joomla.org/showcase/) and they are encouraging sitebuilders to register and submit their Joomla websites for a potential selection as site of the month.

Topic Discussion

RV to John - This is the 6th Annual CMS Expo, can you give us a quick snapshot of the history of the Expo? How did you get started?

DH to Linda - It seems the CMS Expo has become more and more popular each year. Can you talk a bit about the growth and how do you manage it all?

RV to John - Obviously with a name like CMS Expo, it’s more than just a Joomla, Drupal and WordPress conference. How many different CMS’ will you feature this year and how do you get them all to play nice together?

DH to Linda - I see you have a special event for Joomla specific topics, can you tell us a little more about that? What’s the Main focus this year? Do you have an overall theme?

RV to John - I know you’ve been a fan of Open Source for some time John, do you only offer FOSS learning tracks or do you also cover Proprietary systems as well?

DH to Linda - Would you say the conference is geared mostly toward developers or site builders, or is there something for everyone at the CMS Expo?

RV to John - So in just a few minutes, tell my why I should plop down my hard earned money to attend this year’s CMS Expo?

DH to Linda - Are you planning any after hours events this year? Are there things to see and do around the event?

RV to John and Linda - Any last words you want to share about this year’s CMS Expo?

Join the Site Showcase Team! It’s just a few hours a month and the only skill you need is the ability to recognize a Joomla site when you see one (a little experience with Mosets Tree helps, but isn't necessary). http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=681&t=710049

RV to RD - J and Beyond is now entering its 3rd year as a truly International Joomla Conference. From what we’ve seen, it’s been a huge success each year. How are things for this year’s event?

DH to BT - Another great schedule has been posted for this year’s sessions. Can you talk a bit about the process you go through to determine the speakers and sessions you will host this year?

RV to RD - The PLT has scheduled another Roadmap meeting to coincide with this years J and Beyond conference and from the looks of the new schedule just released, you guys have added some breakout sessions to support that. Can you tell us a bit about your work with the Joomla PLT this year?

DH to BT - JAB created the Joomla Open Source Creative and Artistic Recognition awards that have become somewhat popular among the community. Can you tell us about the process for that and what’s changed this year? (Nominations for all these awards will be collected until 27th April.)

RV to RD - In the past, you’ve made available tickets and various sponsorships to attendees on a case by case basis. This year, you’ve established a Scholarship Program. Can you tell us a bit about how that’s going?

DH to BT - Will we see video again this year for the sessions? And, can we still get tickets to attend the event?

RV to RD - How’s sponsorship going for this year’s event?

DH to BT - Last year’s theme was the Knights of Open Source, this year you are basing it around Elvis Presley? Will we have a special musical evening?

The 4th Annual Joomla Day New England occurred this past weekend at Marlboro College Graduate School in Brattleboro, VT, and we were lucky enough to have Dianne Henning and Jen Kramer there to catch up with some of the speakers and guests from the event.

In the beginning of the podcast, Dianne and Jen sat down with Mike Hoefer, the MSIT Program Director at Marlboro College, along with Jason Mark from Gravity Switch and a few graduates of STCC that were guests of JoomlaDay NE thanks to a few generous sponsors that gave up their tickets.

The main portion of the show consists of a quaint little discussion that occurred the following morning at breakfast where Dianne and Jen spoke with several guests including Paul Orwig, Jeremy Wilken, Hagen and Christine Graf, Andrea Tarr, Justin Herrin and Mike Carson. They discuss several topics, from Joomla Leadership to unattended children, espresso, kittens and even tattoos. Best I can tell, there was no alcohol involved and no one was harmed by farm animals. But don't quote me on that.

JoomlaDay France - March 24th and 25th in Strasbourg, France. Radek will be presenting a Case Study on how to use SobiPro. If you’re in France this weekend, check it out!

JoomlaDay New England - March 31st is the 4th Annual JoomlaDay at the Marlboro College Graduate School. Jen Kramer and her team at the New England JUG have put together another great lineup this year. Just a few tickets still left. The Template Class on March 30th has sold out!

Introductions

Andrea (Andy) Tarr - Can you tell us who you are, where you’re from and what you do?

Chad Windnagle - Can you tell us who you are, where you’re from and what you do?

Topic Discussion

RV to Chad - I understand you’ve be tagged as the lead for this year’s Google Summer of Code that Joomla has been selected to participate in, but can you tell us who all helped make this happen?

DH to Andy - Have you had much response from possible Mentors for the program? Can you talk a bit about the requirements for that?

RV to Chad - How can Students sign up? Is there a deadline for this, and what’s the process?

DH to Andy - What can Joomla Businesses and Site Builders do to help with the GSoC project? (gifts, consultants and backup mentors?)

RV to Chad - Looking at the GSoC Calendar, NOW is the time for students and mentors to start discussing what project they want to work on together. Is there a list of project ideas posted?

DH to Andy - How can these new students learn more about the Joomla project and its processes? Do you need more people to help with training?

RV to Chad - I think the matching of Mentors and Students has proven to be a successful way for students to learn and produce usable code while benefiting Open Source projects like Joomla. What is your idea of a successful Google Summer of Code?

DH to Andy - You are also involved in the Joomla Roadmap Project. Will you be able to align any of the student projects with the PLT Working Groups?

RV to Chad - What kinds of ideas are on the idea list? Also, how do you get to the list?

RV to Matt - This year the JoomlaDay New England team has put together another great lineup of speakers, but before we get started on that, I’d like to ask Matt about the Friday night Event, the Template Workshop that is scheduled from 5:00 to 8:30 PM. Matt you are leading the class with Barb Ackemann, can you tell us about that? What prompted you two to get together for a class like this?

DH to Jen - Jen, this is the 4th Annual JoomlaDay New England, and as usual you have a great list of sponsors. Can you tell us a bit about the host of the event and Platinum sponsor Marlboro College Graduate School?

RV to Matt - Last year I believe you gave a presentation on the Molajo project at JoomlaDay New England. Are you looking forward to this year’s template class and the possibility of using your own Construct Framework during the presentation?

DH to Jen - Can you tell us about the focus of this year’s presentations? What can people expect from the 3 different tracks running simultaneously?

RV to Matt - It looks like Friday night will be your main focus, what are you looking forward to on Saturday? Are there any presentations that you consider ‘must attend’?

DH to Jen - Organizing and running an event is always a huge undertaking, but you have a great team with a good amount of experience to help out. Would you like to tell us a little bit about your team?

RV to Matt - I heard there was rumor going around that you were in the process of setting up a Joomla speed dating session during this event, is that true?

DH to Jen - If time permits, will we get a chance to chat with you again Friday night before the event, or possibly Saturday? We would love to do a remote JoomStew from the Event if possible. Maybe we could follow up on Matt’s speed dating session as well?

Paul Orwig has been a volunteer in the Joomla! project for a few years now. He started out as a webmaster for the Joomla Community website, and then moved on to become a member of the Community Leadership Team (CLT). His duties there included co-managing the JED with Matt Lipscomb, as well as creating the Joomla Community Magazine website that is still one of the best sources for Joomla news today.

In October of 2010, Paul was elected to the board of Open Source Matters, and soon was tasked with the role of Treasurer in the project. After a full year of working in both the CLT and OSM at the same time, Paul has stepped down from his CLT position to focus his efforts on his newly elected position as OSM President.

Listen in on the podcast to find out more about OSM and the Joomla project through the eyes of Paul Orwig.

Introduction:

Paul Orwig - Tell us who you are, where you’re from and what you do please?

Discussion:

First I want to say Congratulations on your newly elected OSM position. I’m really excited to see what you can accomplish during your term. Do you share the same excitement as well? Was this something you wanted to do?

As President of OSM, your duties will range far and wide, depending on the day or the hour, as it were, and I think I read you recently turned over the reigns of the Joomla Community Magazine to Dianne Henning and Alice Grevet. Can you tell us how the Magazine project has been growing and what’s your assessment of the magazine 18 months into it?

As the date for J and Beyond 2012 moves closer, I heard some chatter that the Joomla project may be planning a Leadership Summit around this time. Does it look like that will happen, and if so, what will be the main focus of the discussions this time around?

If my last question didn’t hit you squarely over the head, then I’ll ask directly, do you think we will see any movement toward a restructure of the current Leadership in Joomla as has been discussed over the past 8 months?

Something I never realized was how long things can take in a volunteer organization. This is not a business that has paid staff to work daily on goals and tasks. How can we improve our ability to get things done in a more timely manner? Ryan Ozimek suggested that paid staff might be needed within the Joomla organization in the future. Is this something you’ve had time to form an opinion about?

It seems we have a fairly steady income from both Ads and now the demo sites thanks to CloudAccess.net. Is there a need to increase revenue within the project, and if so, should we be doing it at our own community members expense through the JED, JTD or the JRD? What are your thoughts on this?

I know we are probably running out of time here... but I want to ask 1 more question and I will let you go. I recently read The Art of Community by Jono Bacon for the second time, this time from cover to cover. The book is a great template on how to set up and manage a community from start to finish. Of course every community is different, and times do change, but the one thing I kept being presented was, having goals and sound processes is what will lead to results. What is your vision or hope for the Joomla project in regards to setting up project wide goals and improving sound processes?

The first ever Joomla Day Austin occurred on September 15, 2011 in Downtown Austin, Texas at the Alamo Drafthouse at the Ritz. The venue is unique to most Joomla days as it is an old theatre that has been restored and updated with new seating and amenities that allow for group events to be held.

Another unique idea to Joomla Day Austin was the continuous single-stage presentation format. Due to the unique venue having only 1 stage on which to present, event organizers Kyle and Melinda Ledbetter worked with members of the Austin Joomla Users Group to come up with a format that would have 2 Presenters at the same time for each session throughout the day.

In addition, each session tied together to showcase a complete site redesign of the Minis and Friends website from start to finish. The website was chosen by the Austin JUG members from a group of local Non-Profits who were in need of a website makeover.

The Event turned out to be a huge success from the eyes of both the event organizers and the attendees. Listen in to the podcast and hear the reaction from many of the presenters and the recipients of the free website makeover as well.

Thanks to Kyle and Melinda Ledbetter for allowing us to record this podcast on location, and to all of the guests for taking time to talk to our hosts. Last, but certainly not least, I want to thank Jen Kramer and Dianne Henning for once again taking the time and effort to bring this podcast to you folks here on JoomStew Radio.

Well, it looks like we are finally going to make the move from WordPress to Joomla starting this week. We will not be posting a show over the next few weeks, and hopefully this will be the last blog post on this platform.

Dianne suggested we should make a case study out of this experience, so taking her idea one step farther, I decided I would do a live blog series over on my business site at Roberts Web Design.

So if you want to know the details of how we are migrating from WordPress 3.2 to Joomla 1.5, then Joomla 1.6 and finally Joomla 1.7 when it's released in a few weeks, you can follow along there. Here's the first post in the series:

Joomla will be releasing Joomla 1.7 in the next 30 days, and we got a chance to talk to Andrew about the new release, the changes in the Development Release Cycle, the Framework Separation, Ebay and Microsoft involvement in the Joomla Project and his thoughts on Forks based on Joomla code.

I'd like to take a minute to give special thanks to my co-hosts Dianne Henning and Alice Grevet for all they do to keep this place going. Without them, we wouldn't have a show and I'd be off doing something else by now. Thanks Ladies.

As always, thanks to Andrew for taking the time to share his thoughts with us, it's never a boring show when we get a chance to speak with you.

Introductions

Andrew Eddie - Tell us who you are, where you’re from and what you do please?

Topic Discussion

Joomla 1.7 Release - What can we expect from the new Joomla 1.7 release due July 10th? It seems the community has stepped up to add features to this release, instead of relying solely on what we’ve called ‘core’ developers in the past. Is that the case?

New Developers Release Cycle - Most of the Joomla Community understands the concept of 6 month Short Term releases and a Long Term Release every 18 Months, although my clients are still a bit baffled by it. But this will be our first true 6 month release, with 1.7. Can you talk about who is leading the release and does it seem like the ‘new’ way of doing things is working?

Joomla Platform - Can you tell us about the Framework separation that went into this release? Will it be a separate download? Will Joomla still work?

What is the Framework exactly, and what does it do? Is this something where community members can get involved? If so, how?

Ebay and Microsoft both have become more supportive of Joomla through sponsorship of JoomlaDays and other events, and both have signed a Joomla Contributors Agreement in recent months. Do you see this as a positive move for the Joomla Project? Is there anything we should be mindful of, having such big corporate entities so closely involved in the project?

Let’s take a stab at forks. There is a growing number of Joomla-dependent or Joomla-related applications, but no one has called theirs a fork. What’s your position on forking the code of an open source project like Joomla?

Working in the Community

Following this interview here is the developer link on how you can get started: http://developer.joomla.org/getting-started.html

Check out the Help Wanted topic in the forum: http://forum.joomla.org/viewforum.php?f=681 For example, if you would like to help on the bug squad, you don’t necessarily have to be a programmer. You can help track issues, test some proposed bug fixes. You need to be reasonably familiar with using Joomla and willing to learn new skills.

There is a full list of involvement entry points listed on the June JCM editorial page, http://magazine.joomla.org
