JoomStew Radio – Introducing Square One CMS

Square 1 CMS - Light Joomla Distribution
This week we sit down with 2 great developers within the Joomla Community, Jeremy Wilken and Joe LeBlanc. Both have been part of the Joomla Community for many years, and they have come together to collaborate on a new Joomla Distribution they call Square One CMS. Think of it as the latest Joomla build on a diet. No extensions ship with Square One except the User Manager, ACL and Article component. However, all of the Joomla default extensions are readily available in the Extensions manager and can be added with one click of the mouse.
The idea behind Square One, is to give site builders and developers a clean slate to build out your own distro of Joomla that you can deploy over and over again. Think of it as a Distribution you can use to build Distributions!
Listen in while we discuss how Square One came about, and where these guys plan on taking it in the future.

The Joomla GSoC (Google Summer of Code) student projects for Joomla have been announced. The community can get involved in helping and assisting the students by joining the mailing list, giving them feedback on development mailing lists, and following the work in their github repositories.
Don’t forget the two big events happening in May! The CMSExpo from May 6-8, and J and Beyond from May 18-20. If you haven’t gotten your tickets yet, you can still grab a discount code from the JoomStew podcasts of each of these events.

RV to Jeremy - Alright... so Jeremy, Square One CMS is described as a light Joomla distribution. Can you explain what that is and how it came about?
DH to Joe - When did you first notice Square One and start to get involved with the project?
RV to Jeremy - Who do you think benefits by using Square One? Is it geared toward site-builders, those new to Joomla, seasoned devs? Where’s the market niche for this?
DH to Joe - You’ve recently partnered with Jeremy with both of you joining Cory Webb Media. Congrats. Have you had a chance to use Square One in your work there?
RV to Jeremy - So now that you’ve gotten Square One trimmed down, what’s the next step for Square One? Where do you see it going over the next 6 months?
RV to Joe - Where would you like to see Square One improve Joe? Do you share Jeremy’s vision, or do you have a full-on ulterior motive?
DH to Jeremy - Have you seen much community support for S1 since you released the first stable version? Are you looking for volunteers in specific areas?
RV to Joe - I know Jeremy stated he hopes work done in Square One will make it back upstream to the Joomla project. Have you seen any support of that yet from the community or members of the joomla project?
DH to Jeremy - You’re again part of the J and Beyond Video team this year, will you also get a chance to do a presentation on Square One at JAB 2012?
RV to Joe - We mentioned Joomla and GSOC in the News earlier, are you participating in that this year? Can you talk a bit about that?
Working in the Community
The RCC (Regional Community Coordinators) is working on getting an oversight of all the regional communities that exist in the world. Although this work isn’t finished yet, the RCC will be contacting as many local community and JUG leaders as possible in order to learn from them, and enable them to share their experiences on how to set up and maintain local communities, translations, events and JUGs. The RCC is in formation now, check the Help Wanted forum later this month if you would like to get involved!
The Showcase site team has grown (http://community.joomla.org/showcase/) and they are encouraging sitebuilders to register and submit their Joomla websites for a potential selection as site of the month.

It would be nice if we could get some real benchmarks Joomla V Squareone V PyroCMS V etc. I think this will help out quite a bit. I’ve already sent info about SquareOne to the guys over @ pagodabox and phpfog hopefully we can get some one click installs going soon for SquareOne. Hope that helps looking forward to seeing the benchmarks later down the road.

Here’s a small comparison that Jeremy did, regarding file and database size of Square One vs. Joomla 2.5 vs Joomla 1.7.
